SAN FRANCISCO – Despite a solid showing at the top of the lineup, the San Francisco women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Saint Mary's at The Olympic Club on Friday afternoon.
The Dons' No. 1 player, Genevieve McCloskey took down her opponent Jana McCord 7-6(6) in the first set, and with the score at 2-0 in favor of McCord in the second play was halted on the day. Also unfinished on the day, but in the midst of a back and forth battle, Emily Maxfield took on Jacqueline Pelletier on Court 2. The Gael took a tight set one with a score of 6-4 and the duo was battling at 2 and 1 in the second when Saint Mary's clinched the win.
"Gen got a great first set off of a really good competitor," noted USF head coach Hilary Somers. "Emily at two was really competing and executing well, and Jiayu Mu had a great fight winning the second set to keep us in the match."
After dropping the doubles point to start the day, the Dons fell behind quickly with straight set wins for Saint Mary's on courts 3 and 4, and the Gaels eventually clinched at No. 6. Mu, competing against Parminder Kaur at the No. 5 spot in the lineup, rebounded from a 6-0 defeat in the first set to earn the 6-4 win in the second to extend the match.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 7-6 on the year, and 2-1 in WCC action. Meanwhile the Dons now stand at 3-12 in the spring still seeking its first league victory.
Next, USF closes out a three-match home stand on Saturday at 11 a.m., hosting the Pacific Tigers on the courts of The Olympic Club.
