Dons Go Low on Final Day of WCC's

Final Team and Individual Results

PROVO, Utah – USF shot the lowest team score of the day on Saturday to earn a share of sixth-place at the West Coast Conference Championships which were held at the Riverside Country Club in Provo.

Four sub-par rounds led to a 10-under score of 278 on Saturday, which earned the Dons a tie for sixth place with Loyola Marymount at 865 (+1) for the 54-hole event.

BYU captured the team title with a 24-under score of 840, good for a seven-stroke victory over Pepperdine, which finished at 847 (-17). Saint Mary's finished third at 852 while Pacific and Santa Clara tied for fourth at 862.

BYU's Peter Kuest defeated Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara on the first playoff hole to win the individual title after both golfers finished at 11-under for the tournament.

USF's 10-under round of 278 was the lowest round of the day by three strokes and matched the team's best round of the year to par.

"Today was the type of golf I expected us to play this week," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "It was great to close with such a flurry but unfortunately we dug too big of a hole for ourselves in the second round and didn't come away with the result we were hoping for this week. That said, I think we laid the foundation of what USF golf can be in the future."

Tim Widing, who entered the final round three strokes out of the lead, shot a final round 68 to secure a solo third at 208 (-8). The freshman from Sweden, who shot a 9-under 63 just a week ago on the same course, got off to a blazing start with three birdies on his first five holes. He was 5-under on his round through 11 and just one stroke out of the lead but played his final six holes at 1-over to finish with a 68.

"Tim was phenomenal all week," said Kennedy. "His quality of his play hasn't been seen at USF in quite some time. While he wasn't able to break into the winner's circle this week, he left with a lot of confidence in his abilities to make a run in the upcoming NCAA Regionals. I would not be surprised to see him make it through to the national championships."

USF's seniors Max Alcorn and Michael D'Angelo finished their careers on high notes.

Alcorn birdied three of his last five holes for a final round 69 to move into a tie for 20th place at 217 (+1). D'Angelo turned a season-best 2-under 70 on Saturday, which moved him into a tie for 31st place at 220 (+4). D'Angelo was one of the hottest players on the course early in the day. He holed out his second shot on the par-4, 12th hole, which was his third of the day, and then birdied his next two holes to move to 4-under after five holes. He got to 5-under with a birdie on his 11th hole, but it would be his last of the day.

"We got great play from both of our seniors today," said Kennedy. "I'm so proud of them for how they closed out their careers. They both will be missed."

Henry Chung turned in a 71 to join the pack tied for 31st at 220 (+4). The junior's round was highlighted by an eagle on his fourth hole of the day, the par-5 13th.

Jalen Griffin made five birdies en route to a final round 75 and tied for 39th at 227 (+11).
