SAN FRANCISCO – Charlotte Taylor, a cross country All-American and the NCAA's national champion in the 10,000 meters, can add her third All-American designation of the year to her name.
The Spalding, England, native pursuing a graduate degree in international and development economics was named to the 2016-17 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, released today.
Recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, Taylor was tapped for honors for her stellar performance not only in her sport but also in her studies at USF, as a 4.0 student for the Dons.
"We are thrilled for Charlotte to have earned this prestigious award," noted USF assistant coach Benji Wetli. "She is the epitome of a student-athlete and is just as diligent and driven in her studies as she is with her running. Charlotte is the perfect fit to have at the front of our team and we look forward to her leading us again next year."
Taylor matriculated to USF after earning a first degree from the University of Warwick and she has continued to excel in the classroom throughout her time on the Hilltop, maintaining an unblemished school mark. A U20 World Triathlete champion, she took up racing as a track and cross country competitor in earnest two years ago for the Dons, and since that time she's become one of the most prolific athletes in program history.
This year, the All-American took 10th individually at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and led the Dons to sixth place, their highest-ever NCAA team finish. On the track, she can boast USF's first national championship for a female in any sport after outpacing the competition in the 10K from Eugene, Ore., on June 8. She was also recently awarded USF's Anne Dolan Award, given annually to the Dons' Female Athlete of the Year.
"We are pretty excited about Charlotte, and congratulations to her for being the second first-team Academic All-American in our history," said assistant athletic director of compliance services Robert Tigani. "Obviously her competing at such a high academic level as well as an athletic level of being a national champion is remarkable. I'm incredibly excited for her and proud of her in everything she's been able to accomplish."
CoSIDA began the distinguished Academic All-America program in 1952, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America scholar-athlete honors.
She joins a list of four distinguished Dons that includes Mary Hile (women's basketball, 1980 & '81 – first team), Ola Henmo (men's soccer, 1989 – third team), Joel DeBartoli (men's basketball, 1990 – second team) and Hayden Hinkle (baseball, 2013 – third team), who have received recognition as an Academic All-American. Taylor and Mary Hile-Nepfel are the only two to land on the first team.
