BERKELEY — For the second year in a row, the University of San Francisco's women's tennis team had two Dons make it to the final rounds in singles to highlight the Cal Fall Invitational in Berkeley last weekend.
In singles consolation,
Hanna Borjeson flew past UC Davis's Nikita Pradeep after a withdraw due to illness, later facing Nevada's Marta Ruedas in quarterinfals taking her down in straight sets, 6-1;6-1. In the semifinal round, Borjeson took on fellow teammate
Mya Bui beating her 6-2;6-2. In the final round, Borjeson faced Santa Barbara's Tiffany Lagarde [6] and finished with a 6-1;2-5 score including an injury from Gauchos for the automatic victory.
Mya Bui went to the semi-finals of the consolation of the top flight blue draw beating BYU's Anastasia Abramyan, 6-4;6-1 in the second round. In quarterfinals, Bui fell short in tough sets to Nevada's Anast. Gorbecheva, 3-6;6-4;1-0(10).
Rita Colyer was another Don that took her singles match all the way to the final round. In 16s, Coyler beat BYU's Hermehr Kaur 6-3;6-2 taking her to quarterfinals where she took down Saint Mary's Aubane Ville, 2-6;6-3;6-3. In semifinals, Colyer defeated UC Davis's Shirley Hall in straight sets, 6-4;6-0, but fell in the final round to California's Maria Smith, 6-2;7-5.
"This is a great achievement as a freshman. She did a great job making an impression in only her second collegiate tournament. Last season
Alexa Meyer did something similar when she was a freshman in the same tournament," said Head Coach
Peter Bartlett.
The dynamic duo
Rita Colyer and
Shanna Dos Santos took their doubles match all the way to quarterfinals as they faced California's Jasie Dunk and Maria Smith but could not advance due to an injury from San Francisco.
Emily Maxfield and
Mya Bui took down California'sNo. 3 seeded Alexis Nelson and Anna Bright, 8-5 and advanced to the quarterfinal round where Maxfield and Bui fell to Santa Barbara's Anasta Goncharova and Elizabeth Volodko, 8-5.
"For our team we've set the goal of trying to compete on the final day. This usually indicates that you're in a semi or finals. I feels the team is doing a great job competing against some of these top level programs and I believe we belong," said Head Coach Bartlett.
