SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The University of San Francisco women's golf team finds itself in sixth place after climbing four spots on the leaderboard between rounds one and two. The Dons finished the first day with a 28-over 604 after 36 holes at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational hosted by Washington at the Sahalee Country Club.
USF opened the tournament in 10th place with a 19-over 307 after 18 holes. In the second round the Dons came roaring back. Fighting through rainy, cold and overcast conditions, USF shot 10 shots better as a team in the second round to finish sixth, shooting a 297 as a team.
Sophomore Pearl Rojanapeansatith continues her consistently strong fall with a 5-over 149 (75-74) through two rounds. Her 149 is good enough for a tie at 18th. Rojanapeansatith opened the tournament with three-straight bogeys but was solid after, carding four birdies for the day.
In second for the Dons was Samantha Gong, who finished the afternoon tied for 25th with a 7-over 151. Gong's second round was stellar – she climbed 19 spots on the leaderboard to get back into the top-25 with a 1-over 73 in the second 18.
Joan Soewondo finished in third for the Dons, after finishing with an 8-over 152 (77-75). Like all her teammates, she was much better in the second round. After starting the second round bogey, double bogey, bogey, Soewondo settled down and recorded birdies on holes 14, 18, and two to finish with a 3-over 75 which places her tied for 32nd.
Freshman Jade Siphomsay tied Soewondo, with an 8-over 152. Siphomsay also shot an identical 77-75. Fellow freshman Annika Borrelli comes in tied for 47th with an 11-over 155 after 36 holes.
Tournament host Washington is the leader after 36 holes. They are the only team under par after shooting a 6-under 570. The Huskies' Sarah Rhee is the individual leader after the first day with a 6-under 138.
COACH'S QUOTE
"The team fought through some very adverse conditions today as it rained off and on throughout the first round," said head coach Sara Doell. "Their attitude throughout the day was excellent which helped them to stay strong and to shoot a second round total of 10 shots better from the first round. I was very happy to see that every single player on the team improved their second round from their first round, and I attribute that to how positive they stayed. I am very proud of Pearl to start out playing in the number one position and stay there as she shot two very solid rounds, she looked very confident all day. Great comeback for Sam in her second round as she played much more aggressively. Looking forward to the chance to improve tomorrow."
