Women's Golf

WGOLF | Get to Know Emily Laskin

Next up in our getting to know series is Emily Laskin.  Laskin, a native of Elk Grove, Calif., prepped at St. Francisco High School and spent one year playing at the Naval Academy.  This fall, Laskin played in all four tournaments, posting a stroke average of 75.9.  Her top finish this fall was tied for 26th at the Ram Classic where she opened the tournament firing off a 3-under 69, the second-best individual round by a Don this fall.

"As soon as I started at USF it was very obvious to me who the leader on this team was- Emily stepped up right away to help n the transition as both Devin and I joined the USF family," said head coach Sara Doell. "She is our senior captain who is a very strong leader both on and off the golf course. She is always working on her game and keeping up on the best golf practices and equipment. As a coach knowing that you have a captain that you can depend on and trust is so important and that is exactly who Emily is- a very dependable, hardworking and energetic person!"

Last season, she posted her best collegiate finish taking 13th at the WCC Championships.  That season Laskin appeared in seven events carding a stroke average of 77.5.  As a prep she was a two-time Delta River League MVP and was a two-time team MVP for St. Francis.  She helped guide her team to three Delta River League Championships and four Sac Joaquin Section Division I North Championships.

GOLF:
1. When did you start playing golf and how?
Emily Laskin: I started playing golf when I was 5 years old with my little brother, David. Our mom's friend had just become a certified teaching professional and my mom decided to take us out to see her.

2. What was the deciding factor in why you came to USF to play on the women's golf team?
EL: Transferring into USF I wanted to maintain the high caliber education I had found at my previous institution, while also playing for a top 100 program closer to home. My connection to Coach Glynn stemmed back to high school and I was comfortable with her as a coach and as a person. It also was a bonus to be joining a team where I knew half the girls from junior golf!

3. What is your favorite memory of being a Don?
EL: My favorite memory of being a Don would be watching my friends on women's basketball win the WCC Championship in 2015. I streamed all of the tournament's games!

4. Who is the funniest member of the team and why?
EL: Vanessa is sneaky funny. Anyone who knows her knows she's a quieter person, but when she pipes into a conversation, she has some of the greatest one-liners.

5. Best USF golf travel story?
EL: I think one of the best tournaments we traveled to was the University of Denver tournament in fall 2016 because Coach and Jack took us to Top Golf! It was one of the best bonding experiences as a team! Even Coach and Jack got in on the competitive action!!

6. Your dream foursome would include who?
EL: My brother, Tiger Woods, Lorena Ochoa.

7. What is your favorite golf course?
EL: It's such a hard choice with all of the great courses I've had the opportunity of playing. I'd have to say Monterey Peninsula CC Dunes Course, although I haven't had the chance to play it since the remodel!

8. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? If yes, give us the details!
EL: My two hole in ones have come playing the Cliffs Course at Olympic CC! The first one happened on #9, but I couldn't tell you how it happened because I was too short to see it go in behind the bunker!! The other came on #4 at Cliffs when playing with V in preparation for her NCAA Regional debut in May 2017. I flew it past the flag and it spun back into the hole!

PERSONAL:
1. What city are you from?
EL: I grew up in Elk Grove, CA a suburb just south of Sacramento.

2. Do you have any siblings? If yes, what are their names/ages?
EL: I have two younger siblings: David is 20 and is a sophomore playing college golf at the University of Arizona; Sonia is 18 and is a freshman studying Kinesiology at Texas Christian University.

3. Do you play any other sports?
EL: I played all types of sports growing up — basketball (10 years), taekwondo (8.5 years), soccer, flag football, volleyball, and golf. Now I just focus on golf, but I do miss playing a mix of sports!

4. What are you majoring in here at USF?
EL: International Business.

5. What is your dream job/career?
EL: Professional Golf.
