SANTEE, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's golf team maintained its consistent and largely mistake-free golf as the team took third in the West Coast Conference Championships on Wednesday afternoon at Carlton Oaks Golf Club. It was a pair of undergrads who helped lead the Dons, as the team finished 16-over for a 304.
USF wrapped up the tournament with a three-day score of 53-over 917 (311-302-304). No team shot under 900 for the tournament. The Dons had two top-10 finishers in
Joan Soewondo and senior
Vanessa Ha. Sophomore
Samantha Gong just missed the top-10 after a strong finish coming in tied for 11
th.
Both Soewondo and Gong climbed 10 spots on the leaderboard from where they started after the opening round. Soewondo finished her remarkable run for the Dons carding a team-low 73 for the day. Over three days, she recorded a 9-over 225 (80-72-73) to finish tied for fifth, her highest finish on the leaderboard.
She played largely mistake-free golf all afternoon. Her lone blemish was a pair of bogeys on the second-9 to bring her one over for the round. In the final tournament of her freshman campaign, Soewondo recorded 35 pars and seven birdies. The seven birdies were tied for third-most in the tournament.
Gong also shined on the final round. After starting the tournament with a 10-over 82 she climbed up to her final resting place on the leaderboard, tied for 11
th. On Wednesday, she finished with her best round of the tournament, carding a 2-over 74. For three days she was 16-over for a 232 (82-76-75). She tied teammates Soewondo and Ha with seven birdies for the tournament.
Ha had a pedestrian day by her lofty standards. The Dons' steady senior finished the tournament with a 7-over 79. She remained in the top-10, capturing seventh after finishing with a three-day total of 227 (74-74-79). It is her third top-10 finish in the WCC Championships in her career.
Fellow senior
Emily Laskin finished the day with a 6-over 78. She finished the tournament 16th with a 20-over 236 (78-80-78). The highlight of the day for Laskin, in her final collegiate hole, was a birdie on the par-5 ninth.
The Dons last senior,
Kimberly Liu, wrapped her first West Coast Conference Tournament with a 7-over 79. She finished 23-over for a 239 for three days (79-81-79). Liu was very strong on the par-5s for the tournament posting an average score of 4.92 which was tied for the second best. She tallied five birdies for the tournament and 27 pars.
BYU took home the team championship after defeating Pepperdine in a one-hole team playoff. The Cougars finished the day with a 7-over 294. The Cougars and Waves finished even with a three-day score of 900. The individual champion was BYU's Rose Huang, who was the only player to finish under par, scoring a 2-under 214 (74-71-69).
