SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco women's tennis team came out on top in a close battle against Cal Poly, 4-3 at the Olympic Club Monday afternoon.
Doubles competition didn't go the Dons way when Cal Poly started off the match securing victories at the No. 2 and 3 spot.
San Francisco turned it around when four Dons sealed victories in singles play.
Emily Maxfield answered back after winning 5-4 with a retirement after the first set as Kim Bhunu stepped off the court with a knee injury. Maxfield leads the team with a 7-0 undefeated record in singles competition. The Mustangs tallied another win at the No. 6 spot after
Alisha Sharma was defeated by Emily Ackerman, 6-0, 6-2.
Mya Bui gave the Dons' momentum and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 over Emily Louie-Meadors. Bui's victory evened the dual match at 2-2.
It was
Amber Del Rosario who put the Dons on top at the No. 5 spot after defeating Grace Olyphant, 6-3, 6-4. Moments later, freshman
Rita Colyer competed in her first collegiate dual match while battling hard, she fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The match was up to senior leader,
Shanna Dos Santos as she went head to head with Mustangs' MacKenzie Worsnop. Both players took their singles competition to three tough sets. Dos Santos took care of the first set at 6-4, fell in the second set, 7-6(6), but dominated the third 6-4. Dos Santos clinched the dual match at 4-3 and put the Dons to their fifth victory of the season.
"Today was a really good win against a solid team that we lost to last year. It was another close battle and we came out on top. It's significant also because if the tough week that we have had with the team. Each girl really fought hard today. We had a routine win by
Mya Bui and had a nice victory by
Amber Del Rosario.
Shanna Dos Santos did a great job coming back to clinch the match for us in the final singles match," said head coach
Peter Bartlett.
The Dons will face the San Jose State Spartans on Wednesday at 2 p.m in San Jose.
