SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Junior Carly Lowry headlined three University of San Francisco beach volleyball players Wednesday that earned 2019 West Coast Conference All-Academic honors, as she landed on the WCC All-Academic First Team, with two others being named honorable mention.
Lowry, a Communication Studies major with a 3.82 Grade Point Average, is the first Don to land on the WCC All-Academic First Team since 2017 (Dane Miller). She earned honorable mention accolades in her first year of eligibility for the award last season. Emily Zinger, with a 3.64 GPA in kinesiology, and Camille Araujo, with a 3.26 GPA in psychology, both earned 2019 WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention honors.
Lowry played as part of the Dons' No. 1 pair alongside Anna Dalla Vecchia all season long. She and Dalla Vecchia went 2-2 at the WCC Championship on Friday and Saturday in Santa Monica. They pushed the No. 1 pair from defending champion and No. 5-ranked Pepperdine to three sets. Lowry and Dalla Vecchia also went 2-1 at the Sacramento State Tournament on March 15-16, including beating San Jose State for the second time this season. The duo beat Pac-12 member Utah's No. 1 pair in three sets on March 8, and capped the regular season with a sweep victory at the No. 1 pairs over Pacific.
Zinger was part of the Dons' No. 2 pair with Madelyn LaFollette. The duo was competitive all season long against top-ranked teams, playing within three points in sets against Saint Mary's, Stanford and California. Araujo played mostly at the No. 4 pairs spot for USF, teaming with Victoria Rogers. She earned key victories at the WCC Midseason Tournament on March 29-30 to help the Dons finish third, including wins over Portland and Santa Clara (twice). She went 6-0 on the season versus two-year college opponents.
