BVB | Dons Fall to Spartans 4-1 in Friday Matinee

SAN JOSE, Calif. – For the second consecutive match Anna Dalla Vecchia and Laurie McGrath came away with a win, but it was not enough as the University of San Francisco beach volleyball team fell to host San Jose State 4-1 at Spartan Beach on Friday.

"Anna and Laurie led us from the 1s position. They were efficient in their execution and their conditioning allowed them to win in two," said head coach Frank Lavrisha. "The Dons were in this match going to the deciding set in 2s, 3s, and 5s. Ally Wada debuted in college beach at the 3s with Ella Reames. It was evident the "Sandy Dons" sharpened their play as the day wore on, just barely missing their first match win of the season."

As Lavrisha noted, USF (0-5) continues to improve.  The Dons took the 1s in a convincing straight-sets win and three of the remaining four pairs went to a third set.

Dalla Vecchia and McGrath improve to 2-3 on the year at the 1s spot for USF, winning their match 2-0 (22-20, 21-16) against the top pair of San Jose State (6-1).

USF's second pair: Lauren Speckman and Emily Zinger fell in the first set 12-21 before rebounding to take the second set 21-19.  In the third set the duo battled but fell 15-13. USF's third tandem of Wada and Reames also went three sets, taking the second set 21-18.

Shannon Levinson and Katie Wagstaff fell in straight sets 21-5 and 21-19.  Tanner Pemberton and Sophie Sydenham followed the same script as the Dons' 2s and 3s, falling in the first, rebounding with a strong second set, before falling in the deciding set.

The Dons will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 7 when they participate in the WCC/Big West Show down in Santa Cruz.  USF will square off against CSUN, Sacramento State, and CSU Bakersfield.
