SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The University of San Francisco women's tennis team won its second straight match Saturday and fifth in its last six, beating Sacramento State, 6-1, at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts.
The Dons (5-2) won the doubles point and all but the top singles match to run away with the victory. Caragh Courtney and Maria Martinez Vaquero got things going for the dons with a 6-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles. Arianna Capogrosso and Rita Colyer clinched the doubles point for USF with a 6-3 win over Paige Alter and Shauna Casey at No. 2 doubles.
"We did a good job closing out sets today," said San Francisco head coach Peter Bartlett. "This was a tricky Sacramento State team who fought hard. It took a lot of focus from our team to make sure the match didn't run away from them."
Martinez Vaquero also got things going for USF in singles play, quickly sweeping Alter of Sacramento State (0-7), 6-1, 6-0, to put the Dons up, 2-0. Chiho Mushika (No. 4) and Capogrosso (No. 5) also swept their singles matches. Colyer (No. 3) and Azaria Hayes (No. 6) won their singles matches in three sets. Hayes came back from losing the first set against Jin Yu, 6-4, to win the second set, 7-5, and the tiebreaker, 10-6.
"Freshman Maria Martinez Vaquero had a great performance today winning both her doubles and singles matches convincingly," said Bartlett. "This gave our team good momentum. This was followed by Chiho Mushika's win and eventually Arianna Capogrosso was able to clinch the match for us."
San Francisco next hosts UC Davis on Saturday at the Olympic Club.
