Malloy Pavilion Officially Opens Doors

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - University of San Francisco Athletics recently celebrated the opening of Malloy Pavilion on the Hilltop campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11.

"We're excited to open Malloy Pavilion," Director of Athletics Larry Williams said. "We've been anticipating this for a long time and couldn't be more excited to cut the ribbon."

Located between Hayes-Healey residence hall and War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, Malloy Pavilion will serve as the primary practice venue for the San Francisco men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs, relieving time and space constraints in the main gym. Notably, it will also provide a new, fresh space for programs to host camps and community events.

Tom Malloy, '61 and his wife, Sharon, have played a pivotal role in transforming the university's growth throughout the years by making the most substantial single gift ever contributed to USF athletics at the time of their commitment. The Malloys' pledged $5 million to upgrade USF's athletic facilities in 2014 as the impetus for launching broader philanthropic investments throughout the institution as part of the Change the World from Here campaign.

"I've always held a special place in my heart for the USF athletic department," said Tom Malloy. "I am convinced that strong athletics at any university competing at the Division I level means a great deal to the entire institution, especially at USF. There has not been a dedicated building to support basketball on campus since War Memorial Gym opened in 1958 - and we've lacked this. It never allowed for the successful recruiting we needed to do, to make this a better program and that's what I'm so excited about with this new building."

For decades, the Malloys have been integral to philanthropic leadership at USF. The family has supported the construction of the School of Management's Malloy Hall and the John Lo Schiavo, S.J. Center for Science and Innovation, as well as student scholarships.

"We're so thankful to the entire Malloy family for being the impetus for great growth, not just in athletics but for the entire institution," Williams continued.

After graduating from USF with a degree in finance, Tom Malloy joined his father's small underground construction business. Previously known as the Tom Malloy Corporation, Tom grew the business as a general engineering contractor and established the Tom Malloy Corporation, now Trench Shoring Company. The Malloy family legacy at University of San Francisco spans three generations of alumni, and their great-grandchildren made the first basket inside Malloy Pavilion assisted by current USF student-athletes. Please join us in thanking Tom & Sharon Malloy and the Malloy family for their inspiration and support.
