Dons Show Promise, Finish Seventh At The Goodwin

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Back home in the City by the Bay, the University of San Francisco men's golf program showed their promise once again this weekend as the Dons battled against some of the nation's top programs at The Goodwin.

Hosted by Stanford at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the Dons picked up their sixth top ten finish of the year as a team as USF finished 9-over-849 to place seventh overall in the loaded field.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS:
  • Competing at TPC Harding Park for the second time this year (hosted USF Intercollegiate on Sept. 18 + 19, 2023), San Francisco began the tournament by tying for 13th as a team after shooting +9 (289) across round one. Notably, Jakob Melin fired a 69 on Thursday for the Dons to tie for eighth and lead the green and gold early. Looking back, this marked the third time the sophomore fired a 69 or lower at Harding Park after Melin recorded two rounds of 69 at the USF Intercollegiate.
  • Helping San Francisco make a huge climb on Friday, Ben Partridge shot a tournament-low 65 across his second round to jump 103 spots individually as he tied for 12th at even par after 36 holes. For Melin, the second year Don remained in the top ten as he fired a 70 on day two to sit at 1-under heading into Saturday. Additionally, Harry Brown rose eighteen spots himself to tie for 27th at 2-over following two rounds of play.
  • Battling for both the team and individual titles on the final day of action, the green and gold gave it their all until the final hole as USF competed against some of the top collegiate talent in the country. Aiming to grab his first tournament win of the year after placing second at the USF Intercollegiate, Melin impressed by firing a 68 on Saturday to finish at 3-under-207 (69/70/68) and tie for third individually. Not far behind, Partridge shot a 70 across his final round to finish in a tie for 23rd at 2-over-212 (75, 65, 72).
  • Rounding out the lineup, Brown was steady for San Francisco as he tied for 46th at 5-over-215 (72, 70, 73). Notably, Jackson Rothwell tied for 55th at 6-over-216 (74, 71, 71) while Svante Palmgren tied for 145th at 16-over-226 (74, 74, 78).
  • As a unit, the Dons shot the third-best on Par 3's at +5 (avg: 3.08) while also collecting the fourth-most birdies (42). Individually, Melin tied for fourth with eleven birdies while Brown (10), Partridge (9), Rothwell (9) and Palmgren (3) each contributed as well.
UP NEXT:
San Francisco will return to play on Monday, Apr. 8 as the Dons will head to Columbia, Missouri for the Tiger Collegiate Invitational (hosted by Missouri) on Apr. 8 + 9 at The Club at Old Hawthorne. Live results for the tournament will be available via the team's schedule page.
