Chaboche clocks school-record time
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of San Francisco men's and women's cross country teams both earned sixth-place finishes Friday morning at the Joe Piane Invitational at Burke Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus. Through three meets in 2026, both the men and the women have finished in the top 10 in every competition.Â
USF was battling against some of the top teams in the nation on Friday. In the women's race, the Dons competed against No. 1 NC State, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 12 South Carolina and No. 27 Clemson, among other top collegiate runners. On the men's side, the Dons raced against No. 15 Notre Dame.
"This was a really great day for both squads," said head coach Jordan Carpenter. "You always see a number of the top teams in the country come out and this year was no different with four of the top-27 ranked teams in the NCAA and three in the top 12. It was really cool to see our group mix it up with some of those teams. It's cool to see our group in that mix, especially as we look to continue our season with some really big goals on the year, and to do it without our No. 1 runner Anna Buettner, who was an NCAA individual qualifier last year."
On the women's side, USF boasted three runners finishing in the top 45. Faustine Chaboche led the Dons in 25th overall, clocking in a school-record time of 16:36.63. Sofia Urizar was next in 33rd at 16:53.55, followed by Chloe Browne in 44th (17:04.65). USF earned 209 points, finishing ahead of Bradley (223) and Grand Valley State (245).
"Faustine had a huge day," Carpenter said. "She missed the spring with an injury, so it was cool to see her running the way she is. Really great day for Sofia. She's a sophomore who redshirted last year. She has looked awesome, great day from her as our No. 2. It was really cool to see some newcomers work their way into our scoring five. It speaks to the depth that we have. Chloe Browne had a great day and Bella was right behind her as our four and Rose as our five. Huge day for the women. It speaks to some of the big goals that we have as we move into our last regular season meet for this group."
The men's race featured three Dons racking up top-25 finishes. Herbie Johnson leading the way with his 13th-place finish, crossing the finish line at 23:34.9. Daniel Abramowicz was next for the Dons in 21st (23:44.5) and not far behind him was Leo Conil in 24th (23:48.8). In total, seven of the eight USF men's runners compiled lifetime-best times on a course that was a little bit water-logged after some rainy weather.Â
"The men also had a great day," Carpenter said. "Our top three ran tremendously. We have a really strong 1-2-3 punch with three inside of the top 25. Herbie is really developing into a premier cross country runner, finishing 13th today against some really talented runners. Daniel was our No. 2 and Leo rounded out that top three trio. It was good to see them put themselves in the mix at the front of the field and compete really well against talented runners. We're really working on the depth of the men's program."
San Francisco next competes in the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, on Friday, Oct. 16, at Watts Cross Country Course.
