Bradley Zimmer was selected 21st overall by the Cleveland Indians in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft, marking the second time in the last three seasons the Dons have had a first round pick.
"Having all my friends and family here who have watched me from Day 1 of my baseball career, it's a pretty special time for all of us," Zimmer said. "To be drafted by the Cleveland Indians is a tremendous honor. I feel like I can be a tremendous asset to their program and what they have going on there. I'm really excited to go out there and compete."
Â
Zimmer is the fourth Diamond Don ever to be selected in the first round and the first since his brother, Kyle, was selected fifth overall by the Kansas City Royals in 2012.
Â
Â
The other Dons to be selected in the first round are Evan Frederickson (2008) and Aaron Poreda (2007). He is also the 15th player from USF to be taken in the first round of the NBA, MLB, NFL and MLS drafts.
Â
"We're extremely proud of Bradley and what he's meant to this program at USF and happy for his career as a professional athlete," San Francisco head coach
Nino Giarratano said. "He deserves every opportunity he's been given. The family has been wonderful and everybody in the entire USF community has been great."
Â
A unanimous preseason All-American, Zimmer hit .368 with seven home runs, 31 RBI, a team-record seven triples and swiped 21 bases this past season and was named to the All-West Coast Conference Team for the second consecutive year. When the Dons played their final game of the season, Zimmer was the only player in the nation in the top 60 in slugging and the top 50 in steals.
Â
From March 8 to April 10, Zimmer put together a 19-game hit streak, which was the longest in the nation at the time. He had multiple hits in 12 of the 19 games and hit a scalding .453.
Â
Â
Zimmer was also the recipient of the Bill Russell Award, which is presented annually to a USF male student-athlete who has distinguished himself in athletic competition.
Â
In his three seasons on the Hilltop, he complied a career .318 average with 14 home runs, 83 RBI, 107 runs, and 43 stolen bases.
