Dons Conclude Road Swing Saturday at Stanford

(Las Vegas) – San Francisco men's soccer put together two solid halves, but just could not put together enough scoring chances in dropping a 2-0 decision to Cal State Fullerton Sunday morning in the UNLV Nike Invitational at Peter Johann Field. The Dons (1-4-0) could not apply enough pressure to the unbeaten Titans (4-0-1).

"I'm pleased with the way the team battled," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "We gave up two goals on restarts. The team played disciplined and was organized. We just didn't create enough scoring opportunities and this is something we must improve. I thought we had a good weekend overall and gained some valuable experience. You are never pleased with losing a soccer game, but today we competed for 90 minutes. They were just more experienced and created more scoring opportunities than we did."

USF attempted just six shots for the match, while Fullerton fired 16 total and held a whopping 10-1 advantage in the first 45 minutes. The Dons did attempt five corner kicks, compared to seven for the Titans.

Jesse Escalante provided the game-winner in the 40th minute from the top of the box off a feed from Nick Posthuma. In the 51st minute, Posthuma scored his first goal of the season on a header off a long pass from Mario Alvarez.

Junior midfielder Samir Najmeh took a team-high two shots off the bench for San Francisco. Junior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund suffered the loss for USF and made a pair of saves. Trevor Whiddon collected the shutout win and made three saves.

San Francisco returns to action when it travels to Stanford Saturday, September 17. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
