Junior Jocelyn Levig Records 23 Kills for the Dons on First Day
(Pullman, WA) – San Francisco volleyball earned a split in the opening day of the 2011 Nike Cougar Challenge, opening with a sweep against Sam Houston State, before falling 25-19, 25-15, 22-25, 16-25, 15-11 to host Washington State Friday at Bohler Gym. The Dons (4-4) went down 2-0 to the Cougars (7-2) and rallied to force a fifth set, but saw its four-match winning streak come to an end.
Junior outside hitter Jocelyn Levig led USF with 14 kills, while freshman middle blocker Valentina Zaloznik added 10 kills and a match-high eight blocks. Sophomore setter Joan Caloiaro turned in a 35-assist, 15-dig double-double for San Francisco.
"It was a great atmosphere tonight," USF head coach Gilad Doron said. "They had the band, the cougar there. It was good for us to experience that. We really shot ourselves in the foot and made too many unforced errors in the first two sets. We fought all the way back in game three and played well in game four. Once you go to game five, it's anyone's game. We just made mistakes late."
Neither team sizzled offensively. USF hit at a .143 rate with 48 kills, while the Cougars managed a .186 rate with 56 kills. Both teams were a force at the net with Washington State holding a 19 (one solo) – 17 (three solo) blocking advantage.
Meagan Ganzer recorded a match-high 23 kills with nine digs to pace WSU.
San Francisco wraps up play in the 2011 Nike Cougar Challenge Saturday morning when it takes on Manhattan. First serve against the Jaspers is set for 11:00 AM at Bohler Gym.
