(San Francisco) – San Francisco put together a strong defensive effort and collected a 66-65 thrilling West Coast Conference victory against No. 24 Gonzaga in front of a sold out crowd at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (18-11, 8-7 WCC) down the Bulldogs (21-5, 11-3 WCC) for the third straight time on their home floor and the second time when the defending league champions were in the top-25.
Trailing by one, 65-64 senior guard Rashad Green hit a floater in the lane with 3.3 seconds remaining to lift the Dons a 66-65 edge. Elias Harris was well defended and released a desperation 3-pointer as time expired, but the attempt fell short. Green's bucket snapped almost a 3:30 scoreless stretch.
Green finished with a team-high 16 points with five rebounds and five steals. Junior forward Perris Blackwell posted his third straight double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Junior guard Michael Williams added 13 points, while senior forward Angelo Caloiaro chipped in 10 points.
USF's swarming defense collected 14 steals and forced 22 turnovers. The Dons scored 26 points off Bulldog miscues. San Francisco shot at a .491 (26-53) from the floor, while the Zags connected at a .511 (24-47) clip. Gonzaga connected on seve 3-pointers and went 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
Junior forward Elias Harris scored a game-high 21 points with 11 rebounds to pace the Bulldogs. Senior forward Robert Sacre added 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Gonzaga held a 32-23 rebound advantage.
San Francisco hosts longtime Bay Area rival No. 16 Saint Mary's Saturday, February 25 in the regular season finale. Tip-off against the Gaels is set for 8:00 PM in a game televised live on Comcast SportsNet California and broadcast on 95.7 The GAME. USF will honor its senior class – Caloiaro, Green and Jay Wey – in a special pregame ceremony.
