SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The San Francisco men's and women's cross country teams open their season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the USF Cross Country Invitational at Golden Gate Park.
The women's race is set to start at 9:30 a.m. with the men's race slated for a 10:15 a.m. start.
The USF Invitational will be held at Speedway Meadow, south of 30th Ave. and John F. Kennedy Drive. The course is composed primarily of grass and dirt trails with gradual uphills and downhills.
The course will be open for preview on Friday, August 31 from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Both fields include Pac-12 teams Stanford and California with fellow West Coast Conference teams Saint Mary's and Santa Clara. For a full list of teams participating in the 2012 USF Invitational, click here.
The San Francisco's women's team will enter Saturday ranked No. 20 in the country by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association, their highest ever ranking in school history. In addition, the USF women's team was ranked No. 5 in the West Region of the USTFCCCA NCAA preseason regional rankings. The No. 5 ranking is also the highest ever in the history of USF Cross Country. The USF men's team looks to build on their third place finish in the conference last year and climb their way up the regional rankings.
The only women's team with a higher national ranking in the USF Invitational is Stanford at No. 8.
Also headlining the men's field is Stanford, which placed fifth at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships and begins the season ranked No. 9 in the country by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association. The Cardinal are also ranked No. 2 in the West Region.
San Francisco's women's and men's teams both finished third in last year's USF Cross Country Invitational with 71 and 69 total points, respectively.
