The Dons beat No. 18 Toledo and No. 22 Syracuse in a field that included twelve of fourteen teams that were ranked in the top ten in their region. Burkard's seventh place finish led USF's women's side in the 4k Toledo Bubble Buster, while Jose Madera led the men's side to a third place finish after placing 11th overall with a time of 19:27.4 in the Men's four-mile race.
The women's result was all the more impressive because Head Coach Helen Lehman-Winters held out Laura Suur, the 15th-best runner returning from last year's NCAA Championships. Burkard's time of 13:26.1 led the Dons and was the second fastest time for any freshman in Friday's 4k race. Eva Krchova came in in ninth place with a time of 13:27.8, while senior Chloe Treleven finished in 12th place with a time of 13:34.2. Alice Baker finished in 20th place to give San Francisco four women in the top 20, joining Butler as the only school out of the 14-team field to do so.
USF's women finished with 86 points behind first place Butler (72 points). The women's race was comprised of 172 participants.
Junior Jose Madera finished the men's four-mile race with a time of 19:27.4, while USF's men's squad finished with 68 points, behind first place Syracuse (20 points) and Eastern Michigan (50 points).
Eric Causey finished two spots behind Madera in 13th place with a time of 19:31.9 and an average mile pace of 4:53. A trio of Dons - Ganbileg Bor, Steven Garboden and Gustavo Mena - finished within seconds of each other in 21st, 22nd and 23rd place, respectively. Adam Smith and Charlie Johansen rounded out the USF men's side with times of 20:25.6 and 20:37.2, respectively.
Terefe Ejigu of Eastern Michigan won the four-mile race hosted by the University of Toledo in impressive fashion, finishing six seconds ahead of second place runner Martin Hehir of Syracuse. Syracuse, however, would go on to place runners in each of the next eight positions from second to 10th place overall to win the Bubble Buster.
The USF men and women return to California for their next event and head south to Palo Alto to participate in the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 29 at 4:00 p.m.
