SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A highly contested match between the San Francisco Dons and UC Davis resulted in a 2-2 draw Thursday night under the lights at Negoesco Stadium.
San Francisco held a 2-1 advantage with four minutes remaining in the second half, but UC Davis defenseman Martin del Campo tied the game at 2-2 with a strong shot off a rebound inside the box. A brilliant save by Dons goalkeeper Brendan Roslund just moments after the equalizer forced the match into overtime.
Miguel Aguilar's strike off the crossbar in double-overtime nearly gave San Francisco the win, but time ran out as the two sides settled on a draw after 110 minutes of play.
A back-and-forth first half saw equal possession for both sides, but USF got the better of UC Davis after falling behind 1-0.
UC Davis took the lead at the 34-minute mark courtesy of Kevin Schulte's first goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, Dons sophomore defenseman David Romney delivered the equalizer to tie the match at 1-1. Taylor Krueger's corner kick from the right side was deflected by Joshua Smith and onto the left foot of Romney. Romney didn't waste the opportunity, delivering a powerful strike past UC Davis goalkeeper Omar Zeenni for his first goal of the season.
The Dons kept the pressure on for the remainder of the first half, eventually coming through with another goal with just one minute remaining, courtesy of the same Krueger-Romney combination.
Krueger sent another sweeping corner kick into the box from the left side that found the head of Romney. Romney's second goal of the half, and of the season, gave the Dons a 2-1 lead heading into half time.
NOTES: Roslund finished with five saves on the evening, pushing his season total to 12.... the tie was the fourth of the season for the Aggies in five games... Romney led the Dons with four shots... Krueger added two assists to push his season total to three.
