Early goal enough as Dons fall to Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash.—Gonzaga got a goal only minutes into the contest from Heather Johnson and that was all it needed as San Francisco dropped the West Coast Conference match 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak against Gonzaga. The Dons will return to the pitch on Saturday when they look for the upset in their season finale against No. 12 Portland.
The Dons (6-9-4, 1-5-2 WCC) came out on fire and went on the attack. Jessica Nakae's shot was knocked down by Christie Tombari and Mackenzie Krieser was there for the rebound but her attempt was also saved.
Gonzaga quickly turned that momentum around and in the seventh minute, Johnson scored off a cross from the right endline to put it up 1-0.
The Bulldogs nearly added to its lead two minutes later. Tori Lee's header ricocheted off the crossbar and Kasey Rubosky was there to clean it up but Madalyn Schiffel wrapped up the shot to keep it a one goal game.
Gonzaga put three shots on goal in less than 30 seconds.
Krieser, who took three shots in the game, tried to get the Dons on the board and in the 28th minute her shot from the left side was saved by a diving Tombari.
Tombari had four saves on the afternoon.
The Dons made a run at it in the final minutes. Jaciara Mello had her shot in the 86th minute blocked off a corner kick from Amanda Whittle. Whittle gave it one final try in the 89th minute and her shot went wide.
