SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's basketball was the latest West Coast Conference team to fall victim to Gonzaga, as the Bulldogs posted an 84-46 win over the Dons at War Memorial Gym Thursday night.
Gonzaga, who leads the league with a 9-1 conference mark, moved to 19-5 overall and extended its winning streak to seven. The Bulldogs took control of the game five minutes after tipoff when a jumper by Sunny Greinacher made the score 11-8 in favor of the visitors and sparked 23-3 run.
The Bulldogs capitalized on 15 first-half turnovers by the Dons to score 21 points off the USF miscues. The struggles by the home team were exacerbated by cold shooting from the Dons, who only managed 21 points on 6-of-21 shooting from the floor in the first half. USF trailed 49-21 at the break, its largest halftime deficit of the season.
In the second half, Gonzaga grew its lead to 43 points when Greinacher scored a triple with 5:03 to play and the Bulldogs had the 78-35 advantage. Playing through to the final whistle, USF scored the next 10 points in the game with the signature Dons defense leading to offense as a pair of Taj Winston steals led to layups and defensive rebounds by Mel Khlok and Zhane Dikes were converted into points.
After two points in the first half, Dikes added nine in the second to lead the Dons offensively, finishing with 11 points and three steals. Khlok and Winston contributed 10 points apiece and the trio made 48 percent if its shots. Meanwhile, the rest of the team went 4-of-20 from the field.
For the Bulldogs, Greinacher contributed 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Taelor Karr's 18 points that included a 4-of-7 outing from beyond the arc paced all scorers. Gonzaga outrebounded USF 49-30 and finished with 16 second-chance points on 21 offensive rebounds.
The Dons finish off its three-game home stand against Santa Clara on Saturday at 2 p.m.
