SAN FRANCISCO—Following a long homestand, the Dons hit the road for the first time and will play Nebraska and Kansas in the Kansas Invitational this weekend.
USF went 4-1-0 in its five home matches and is currently on a two-game winning streak after victories over UC Davis and Harvard in the USF Tournament last weekend. But the road will provide tougher tasks with a pair of big conference opponents coming up.
They will play Nebraska (2-2-1) on Friday at 11:30 a.m. to open the weekend of action. The Cornhuskers played WCC rival BYU on Aug. 31 and dropped the contest 3-0. Since then Nebraska has had two double overtime matches but failed to come out on top in either.
Freshman forward Jaycie Johnson leads the squad from Lincoln, Neb. with three goals.
The Dons will then play the host team, Kansas, on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Jayhawks (3-2-1) are coming off a road trip through the Southwest where they played Arizona State and Arizona. Kansas opens the weekend by playing WCC foe San Diego on Friday.
Senior Caroline Kastor, an All-Big 12 second teamer last season, has scored three goals and chipped in on two others this season.
USF has never faced either opponent.
The Dons have played solid defense through its first five matches and could very easily be sitting at 5-0-0. Defenders Jessica Nakae and Halle Bissin have played well of late and goalie Madalyn Schiffel has been as Head Coach jim Millinder advertised before the season.
Schiffel has allowed two goals through those five contests and is ranked 29th in the nation in goals against average (0.391) and 47th in save percentage (0.875).
This weekend starts a stretch of five straight games away from Negoesco Stadium.
