SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's basketball continues to roll through the non-conference slate, downing North Texas 60-42 Wednesday night at War Memorial Gym.
For the Dons, the victory keeps their undefeated home record intact and the team improves to 8-2 on the year. North Texas, meanwhile, falls to 1-7 on the year. USF's 8-2 mark is the first since the 1996-97 season, and six straight home victories also hasn't been seen since the 96-97 campaign when the team rolled off eight consecutive wins at War Memorial Gym.
But head coach
Jennifer Azzi hasn't focused on records in the past, and she isn't resting on records now.
"I've never gotten caught up in records since I took the job at USF, and I certainly don't want to start now," she said. "It's been a building process and every time we leave a game all our staff is thinking about the things that we still need to improve on and I think that is a healthy mindset for both us and our players. But at the same time, I'm very proud of how our team has handled the preseason, executed and really played well together."
USF was yet again led by junior
Taylor Proctor, whose impressive line of 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four blocks stood out on the stat sheet. Sophomore
Rachel Howard contributed 12 points as the Dons' only other double-digit scorer in the contest.
Despite the victorious effort, the Dons were slow to get out of the gate offensively. Ten minutes into the contest the Dons were up 11-3, and USF and North Texas was shooting a combined 4-for-29 from the field. In fact, the first points for the Mean Green didn't come until the 11:37 mark in the first half off a jumper from JohVonna Darrington.
"Offensively, I think we were a little bit kind of slow in the beginning but when Aundrea drained a three and Rachel drained a three in the first half it really started to ignite us offensively," Azzi said. "They've done a great job shooting the ball this season, especially Aundrea. She's played a big role for us this year and just coming in with a lot of poise, a lot of confidence and knocking down open threes."
That three from
Aundrea Gordon, a senior from McKinney, Texas, put the score at 16-5 and on the ensuing possession for USF Howard found her outside shot to widen the gap to 14 points with 6:17 remaining in the first period.
The back-to-back triples sparked a 10-0 run after the outlet pass from
Zhane Dikes found Gordon who in turn dished to Proctor for the layup to make it 23-5 with 3:59 on the clock. The Dons held the 28-15 advantage at the break, and held North Texas to 17.9 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Dons would go on to win the game 60-42, narrowly missing holding an opponent under 40 points for the first time since 2003. However, the 42 points scored against the USF defense is the fourth game an opponent has failed to break 50 points on the year. In fact, USF's average of 55.2 points per game given up is first in the West Coast Conference and currently rates as the 37th-best scoring defense in the NCAA.
For Texas native
Claudia Price, who hails from Mesquite, the win against a familiar foe was especially sweet.
"It feels awesome to beat a team from back home and just show them why I chose to come to USF and just be a part of a family here," Price said. "I think we just executed well. We've just got to continue playing together and we can be a game-changer this season."
USF concludes the non-conference portion of the schedule Saturday as San Jose State tangles with the Dons. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m. from War Memorial Gym.
