Three goals power Dons past Nevada

RENO, Nev.—After a tough loss on Friday against California, the Dons were aggressive early and it paid off as a pair of first half goals was the difference in their 3-0 win over Nevada on Sunday afternoon.
"I think they were disappointed [against Cal]," San Francisco head coach Jim Millinder said. "I thought today they'd be more comfortable, relaxed… They rebounded well. That shows the character of the team."
Nevada starting goalie Kelsey Quintos landed awkwardly after making a save on a shot by Jessica Nakae in the 10th minute and left the match with an apparent injury and the Dons took full advantage.
In the 21st minute, San Francisco forced a corner kick and Amanda Whittle tapped it to Jaciara Mello in the flat who then curved her shot from about 20 yards out just over the leaping goalkeeper Devyn Bryer to give the Dons a 1-0 lead.
Whittle has three points in her first two games this season.
One minute later, Nakae recovered a shot attempt about 12 yards out and snuck it by Bryer in the bottom right corner to put USF up by two. Maddy Glaser got her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute on a shot from just outside of the box into the top right corner.
"It was a good performance from the team today," Millinder said. "They should be proud of going on the road and getting a win."
The Dons peppered the Wolfpack with 14 shots and nine on goal. It was the first time USF had scored three or more goals since Aug. 31, 2012 against Sacramento State (4-1).
It is the fourth straight season the Dons (1-1-0) have garnered a victory over Nevada and it is also the fourth straight shutout of the Wolfpack.
The Dons will return to the pitch on Friday when they play host to Portland State, California and LIU Brooklyn for the USF Tournament. USF is set to play Portland State on Friday and LIU Brooklyn on Sunday.
San Francisco's defense took care of the rest, limiting Nevada to six shots on the afternoon with three on goal. Madalyn Schiffel picked up three saves and recorded her first shutout of the season.
"It's something to build off of," Millinder said. "We want to play one game at a time."
