Stanford Invitational results
Jose Madera and Eric Causey finished 3-4 to lead the Dons to the fifth-place finish at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on Saturday.
Causey and Madera crossed the finish line in virtually a dead heat, finishing the 8,000-meter course at Stanford Golf Course in 23:35. For Causey, Saturday marked his first race since competing in last year's NCAA Cross Country National Championships.
"Eric and Jose executed perfectly, running very patient early and then moving into the top five in the later stages of the race," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "They ran very controlled and clearly demonstrated they have much more to come as the season progresses."
Madera, a senior, has now completed two race this year after redshirting the entire 2013 season due to injury. The Anaheim, Calif. native opened his season on Sept. 19 at the West Coast Conference Preview where he placed fourth.
The Stanford Invitational marked the first race that counts toward qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in Indiana this season.
"I am very pleased with how our men performed today," Lehman-Winters said. "We pretty much beat all of the teams who we are capable of beating at this point in the season. Yet, we still have a ton of room for improvement and clearly need to be more effective in our 5-7 positions."
While Causey and Madera led the way, the Dons received help from their supporting cast, which propel the team to a fifth-place finish in a field of 18 Division 1 schools.
Jarrett Moore, who has now completed three races this season, finished in 36th place with a time of 24:34.
"Jarrett took a huge step forward today and even finished with a lot left in the tank," Lehman-Winters said.
Freshman Mohamed Aziz crossed the finish line not far behind Moore, placing 66th with a time of 24:53.
"Mo continues to impress us and has quickly become an important factor in our scoring five," Lehman-Winters said.
Sophomore Tom Bradley (26:25), freshman Quentin Purtzer (26:30) and sophomore Omar Solis (27:01) rounded out the field for USF, finishing 237th, 244th, and 288th respectively.
Washington State placed first overall with 73 points, while UC Santa Barbara and Stanford rounded out the top three.
Individually, Stanford finished 1-2. Joe Rosa won with a time of 23:16, while Maxim Korolev finished a hair behind Rosa in 23:16.
