Junior Elena Burkard, running in her second race this season, led the Dons to a 15th place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on Friday.
"Clearly, we are very disappointed with our team results today as we are a much better team than we demonstrated today," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We had some unfortunate mishaps with our top three and we had very little production from the rest of the squad. We have to get back to work and put things back together and get ready for Wisconsin."
Burkard navigated the 5,000-meter course in 16:45.2, to finish in 19th place. Senior Jana Soethout, also racing for just the second time this year, followed Burkard across the finish line, placing 36th with a time of 16:59.0.
Freshman Haley Dorris, who has delivered several impressive performances in her short collegiate career, placed 99th with a time of 17:31.2.
Sophomore Ashley Moffett and senior Kate Jamboretz finished close behind Dorris.
Moffett finished 99th in 17:36.4, while Jamboretz finished 100th in 17:37.5.
Two freshmen rounded out the field for the Dons.
Catherine Clohesy finished 129th in 18:10.7, while Kelsey Nielsen finished 150th in 18:20.8.
"Our freshmen got off the line well in a large competitive field but did not manage themselves very well in the middle," Lehman-Winters said.
Senior Charlotte Arter won Friday's race in 16:09.3, leading New Mexico to a first place overall finish.
