Spokane, Wash. –– The USF men's cross country team placed fourth overall at the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday morning as graduate transfer Alex Short led the Dons, placing fourth overall with a time of 24:58.2
BYU, the nation's No. 4 team, dominated the race as Aaron Fletcher (24:40.1), Nicolas Montanez (24:44.4) and Dallin Farnsworth (24:49.4) placed first, second and third respectively to push the Cougars to its second conference title in three years. BYU totalled 17 team points, followed by Portland (66), Gonzaga (83) and USF (116). Short ran a very impressive race, as he was the only non-BYU runner to finish in the top-eight of the field.
Following Short was Matt Leach in 10th place with a time of 25:15.7 and Mohamed Aziz in 23rd, completing the race in 25:57.5. Ryan Driscoll finished 44th with a time of 26:37.2 and Caleb McClain (26:38.4), Quentin Purtzer (26:42.0) and Edward Shepherd (26:46.7) finished 46th, 47th and 48th respectively. Freshman Connor Cavassa also competed for the Dons, finishing in 76th with a time of 29:39.3. By finishing top-10, Short and Leach were both named members of the All-WCC First Team.
"It was great to have two guys in the top-10, but our team performance was not what we are capable of," said head cross country coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We will come back at West Regionals in two weeks and do a much better job of measuring the race off."
