MARICOPA, Ariz. – USF men's golf team hopes of winning the AK-Shin Wyoming Southern Dunes Collegiate went by the wayside after the Dons shot a final round 301 on Sunday to finish in third place, 14 strokes behind first place Idaho.
The Dons entered the final round one stroke behind Idaho in the team competition, but slipped well off the pace after carding a 13-over round of 301 on the Southern Dunes course.
Senior Sebastian Crookall-Nixon and sophomore Henry Chung, who were a combined 12-under after 36 holes, shot rounds of 77 and 79 on Sunday to fall out of contention for medalist honors. Both golfers tied for fifth at even par 216, 10 strokes behind medalist Nicolo Galletti, an individual from Arizona State.
Chung was still in the title mix after playing his first nine holes 1-under par. However, the back nine wasn't as kind, as the sophomore played his final nine holes eight over.
Max Alcorn turned in USF's lowest round of the day, shooting an even par 72 to move nine spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 15th place at 219 (+3).
Kraig McLeod and Jalen Griffin tied for 29th at 227 (+11) after shooting rounds of 75 and 77, respectively, on Sunday.
Mathias Wentjarvi, playing as an individual, tied for 40th at 233 (+17) after posting a final round 79.
USF will return to action on Oct. 12 as the Dons join the field at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax.
