SAN FRANCISCO –– Alex Short will represent the USF men's cross country team at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kent. on Saturday morning. The 10K race, held at Tom Sawyer State Park, is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. PT.
Short qualified for the NCAA Championships via an individual at-large bid after placing 15th at the NCAA West Regionals last weekend. This season, the graduate student from Bicknacre, England has posted four, top 20 performances this season and earned All-West Coast Conference and All-West Region honors as well.
This will be the third year in a row that USF has sent an individual at-large qualifier to the NCAA Championships - Eric Causey (2013) and Jose Madera (2014) have represented the Green and Gold the past two years, finishing 11th and 215th, respectively.
"The fact that we have been represented by three different men over the past three years is really phenomenal," said head cross country coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "Although this is Alex's first trip to the NCAA Championships, he is equipped to be extremely effective in this field."
In total, 31 teams will compete on Saturday, with 38 additional individual qualifiers also set to take the starting line. Four individual qualifiers were selected from the West Region - Matthew Crichlow (Gonzaga), Bryan Guijarro (UCSB) and Anthony Ortolan (UCSB) all received at-large bids in addition to Short.
Short's Success
In his first year on the Hilltop, Short has become USF's top runner, leading the Dons in every meet he has raced in this season. The Brit burst onto the scene, taking first place in a dual meet against Boise State on Sept. 11. Short then placed 5th at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational before earning 31st overall at the Pre-Nationals. At the West Coast Conference Championships and the NCAA West Regionals, Short paced the Dons in both meets, taking 4th and 15th, respectively.
