USF Drops 87-83 Decision to Loyola Marymount

Post Game Interviews and Highlights

SAN FRANCISCO -- USF could not survive 12 three-pointers by Loyola Marymount and fell to the hot-shooting Lions, 87-83 Thursday night on the Hilltop.

The loss drops USF's record to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the WCC while the Lions snap a five-game losing streak to improve to 8-9 and 1-5 in conference play.

Loyola Marymount, which came into the game ranked eighth in the WCC in three-point percentage, made a season-high 12 three-pointers on 26 attempts from distance to earn its first conference victory of the season. USF gave up 15 three-pointers in its previous game to BYU in a 102-92 defeat last Saturday in Provo.

Senior David Humphries came off the bench to make 6-of-10 shots from distance en route to a 20-point scoring night. Adom Jacko added 16 while Joshua Spiers also reached double figures with 11.

Tim Derksen and Devin Watson each had 20 points to pace the Dons, while Ronnie Boyce returned the starting lineup and added 17.

The Lions also made 17-of-19 of their free throw tries while the Dons managed to make just 16-of-28 shots from the line in the four point loss. LMU also held a 40-39 advantage on the boards.

USF's largest lead in the game was five points at 22-17 with 12:03 left in the first half, but the Lions outscored the Dons, 22-12 over the final 7:57 of the first period to take a 39-34 lead at the break. Humphries and Marin Mornar each made a pair of three-pointers during the run.

LMU led by as many as 11 points at 52-41 at the 15:39 mark of the second half after Humphries drained his third 3-pointer of the game. Back-to-back threes by Boyce and Chase Foster keyed a 9-0 USF run that whittled the lead down to 52-50 with 13:23 remaining.

Humphries sixth three-pointer of the night gave LMU a 78-72 lead with 1:27 left. Turnovers and missed free throws cost the Dons dearly down the stretch.

With LMU holding an 81-80 lead, USF's Uche Ofoegbu rejected a lay-up attempt by Munis Tutu but Watson missed a potential go-ahead layup with :35 left. Tutu was fouled on the rebound by Derksen and made both free throws to give the Lions an 83-80 lead.

Watson then misfired on a three-pointer but Derksen gathered the rebound and was fouled by Shamar Johnson, but he missed both free throws with 22.5 remaining. Spiers gathered the second miss but was whistled for traveling, giving new life to the Dons.

Following a timeout, the Dons turned the ball over on the inbounds play and the Lions made their last four free throws of the game to ice their first conference win of the season.

"Defensively, we just weren't engaged or locked in," said head coach Rex Walters. "There wasn't a sense of urgency to play our game. We have to shoot 'we' shots and not 'me' shots and play a lot harder and smarter than we did tonight."

USF will return to action on Saturday when the Dons play host to the Pepperdine Waves beginning at 1:00 p.m. at War Memorial at The Sobrato Center in the WCC's Game of the Week.
