At the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon in Berkeley, the No. 69 USF Dons suffered a 4-0 defeat to No. 27 California in a matchup against two Bay Area programs.In the first doubles result of the day, Mads Engsted and Florian Lakat won easily against USF's Tynan Maguire and Christian Brockstedt, earning the 6-1 win at No. 2. With the doubles point on the line, Cal's Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura beat Vasco Valverde and Ryan Marker 6-2 for the win at No. 3.Â
Engsted got things going for the Golden Bears in singles play, winning his match at the No. 6 spot against Jerod Mah, 6-0, 6-2. Oskar Wikberg kept the momentum in Cal's favor with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Woravin Kumthonkittikul at No. 5. Needing a win to keep the match alive for the Dons, Nils Skajaa was unable to pull off the upset against Andre Gorranson, the No. 3 singles player in the country, and lost 6-2, 6-0. Gorransson clinched it for the Bears, who moved to 2-1 on the year. With the loss, the Dons fell to 1-5.Â
USF will next play at UC Davis on Feb. 6 at 12 p.m.Â
