SAN FRANICSCO – The San Francisco women's basketball team began the Molly Goodenbour era with a 91-80 victory over Sacramento State on Friday night, opening the season-opening twin bill from War Memorial at the Sobrato Center in style.
The Dons were paced by a banner night for junior Michaela Rakova, who poured in a career-high 26 points while collecting a career-best 13 rebounds. This marks the first career double-double for the 6-3 forward from Ivanka pri Dunaji, Slovakia.

She was not alone in filling up the stat sheet, as redshirt junior Kalyn Simon added 15 points and six assists, and senior Rachel Howard put in 14 in the season debut. Junior Anna Seilund added 11 rebounds and seven assists. Five dishes for the junior from Copenhagen, Denmark, were served up in a Euro connection with Rakova.
"[Michaela's] teammates did a great job of finding her and she finished really well," noted head coach Molly Goodenbour. "I'm really pleased with her rebounding. We've asked our kids, especially this week, to be more assertive, be more aggressive on the boards and I'm really pleased with our rebounding effort.
"All these kids were in much different roles last year. We've asked these players to step into roles where they're playing a bigger part of scoring, a bigger part of bringing the ball up the floor, a bigger part of rebounding, and I think Michaela is going to get better as the year goes on."
USF never trailed in the contest, jumping out to the 6-0 lead after points in the paint for Rakova at the 7:29 mark. The Dons extended the advantage to double digits to close the period after Seilund found Rakova for the bucket. A free throw for freshman Nia Alexander found the bottom of the net with 17.8 seconds to play and the score at 19-8 in favor of the home team.
USF went on an 11-0 run to stretch the score to 39-18 with 1:57 remaining in the half. Two-point baskets by Claudia Price, Rakova, Ninni Salmi and Howard, were followed with a three for the senior from Berkeley, Calif., to ensure the game pendulum swung in the favor of the Dons.
USF led by 23 after back-to-back baskets in the pain and the score at 50-27 with 7:19 on the third quarter clock. Sacramento State mounted a comeback to cut the Dons' advantage to 11 after Hornets' leading scorer Emily Easom hit 4-of-5 from the line, and Quayonna Harris went to the rack for the basket to make it 56-45 with 3:16 to play in the period.
Sacramento State was able to shave the USF lead to 10 after Maranne Johnson's triple with 8:06 remaining in the contest, but the Hornets could never break the double-digit barrier.
Both teams started the night quietly, but the fast-paced shot taking style for Sacramento State was quickly evident. The Dons kept up with the momentum and the two teams combined for 37 attempts in the first period of play. By the conclusion of the contest the teams took a total of 161 attempts from the floor but USF connected on 48 percent of its attempts, compared to the Hornets' 35 percent shooting on the night.
The Dons finished with the impressive 61-37 rebounding edge, and USF's Rakova, Seilund and Salmi combined for four blocks on the night. Sacramento State was paced by four scorers in double figures, with Easom's 16-point outing leading the way in the loss.
"I thought the second half got away from us a little bit in some stretches there with too many turnovers, but overall really pleased with this being the first game of 2016-17," said Goodenbour. "I thought the kids did a nice job of trying to execute what we worked on all week.
"This was such a unique team to play with their pressing style that we spent a lot of time just preparing for that. We need to get back to doing the things that we'll see the remainder of the season, like being able to execute in the half court and push the ball in transition and play good defense."
USF stays at home for its next contest, hosting Seattle U on the Hilltop on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
