SAN FRANCISCO -- In the WCC opener at the California Tennis Club, the USF men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Pacific on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers got off to a hot start with Daniel Alameh and Alex Giannini topping
Thomas Takemoto and
Ryan Marker, 6-2, in the No. 2 doubles match. Pacific then clinched the doubles point in the No. 3 match, as Miguel Diaz and Bernardo Oliveira beat
Jason Lee and
Christian Brockstedt, 6-2.
In singles, Pacific continued to build on its momentum from the doubles point as Sem Verbeek beat
Nils Skajaa, 6-3, 6-1. Marker, who entered the match with four wins for the Dons this spring, added a fifth on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Diaz in the No. 3 spot. The Dons then had a shot to even the match, but Takemoto came up short against Giannini, losing 6-4, 6-4.
Pacific added to its lead in the No. 2 slot, with Alameh beating
Vasco Valverde, 7-5, 6-4 in a very close match.
Jerod Mah had a great start against Oliveira, taking the first set 6-2. However, Oliveira came back to win 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the No. 6 match. In the final match of the afternoon,
Woravin Kumthonkittikul earned a solid 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4 win over Jose Chamba in the No. 5 slot.
The Dons will return to action on Mar. 4, where they will travel to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly.
