SAN FRANCISCO –– Despite losing the doubles point to begin the match, the Dons battled back by rattling off four straight singles wins to clinch a 4-3 victory over Eastern Washington at the Olympic Club on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Dons finished their homestand 2-0.
The Eagles started off fast at No. 3 doubles, with Dani Young and Katrina Domingo beating
Sofia Holmberg and
Shanna Dos Santos 6-2. The Dons were able to even the doubles point on the No. 1 court, with
Andrea Ka and
Thyra Taune picking up their sixth doubles win together, closing out a 6-4 win over Janaya Smith and Faye Worrall. With the doubles point on the line,
Genevieve McCloskey and
Hanna Börjeson took Rachel Swindell and Moira Hedberg to a tiebreaker, but Eastern Washington squeaked out a 7-6(3) win to move up 1-0 in the match.
Desperately needing to swing the momentum back in USF's favor, Ka made quick work of Smith, earning her team-leading eighth singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win. The Dons kept it going on the No. 5 court, as Börjeson overpowered Erin Blessing, winning 6-1, 6-0 for the straight-set victory. With her team up 2-1, McCloskey dominated Swindell 6-0, 6-2 to put the Dons up by two points.Â
On the No. 2 court, Taune had a chance to clinch the match for her squad and did just that. After a 6-4 victory in the first set, the Don went to a tiebreaker with Hedberg, but earned the 7-5 win to close things out for the Green and Gold.Â
In the remanining two matches,
Jiayu Mu fell to Young 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 6 court and Worrall topped Dos Santos 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 match.
USF will return to action on March 25 at Saint Mary's at 12 p.m.Â
