SAN FRANCISCO –– The USF women's tennis team picked up a huge win on Saturday at the Olympic Club taking down a 12-win Gonzaga team, 4-2, to earn the weekend sweep and move to 2-3 in conference play.
After beating Portland on Friday, the Dons needed to play some stellar tennis to earn a victory over the Bulldogs and did just that.
Gonzaga's Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon took the doubles match on the No. 2 court, 6-2, over Shanna Dos Santos and Hanna Borjeson, but the Dons would battle back. The senior pairing of Andrea Ka and Thyra Taune overmatched Samantha Polayes and Sophie Whittle on the No. 1 court, earning a 6-2 win. With the doubles point on the line, Genevieve McCloskey and Sofia Holmberg turned in a clutch performance, beating Sissi Koehler and Domonique Garley 6-2 to push USF ahead.
In singles action, Gonzaga quickly evened the match at No. 3, with Nevada Apollo beating McCloskey 6-4, 6-2. The Bulldogs then pulled ahead on the No. 6 court, with Garley beating Borjeson 7-5, 6-2. Trailing 2-1, the Dons battled right back as Ka beat Whittle 6-0, 7-6(5) at No. 1. After losing the first 6-1 on the No. 2 court, Thyra Taune turned things around with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Polayes to give USF the 3-2 edge.
At No. 4 singles, the freshman Dos Santos lost 7-5 in the first set tiebreaker to Bourguignon. However, the Don stepped up big time, winning 6-3, 7-6(3) to give the Green and Gold the weekend sweep.
"The girls dug deep for the win today," said head coach Hilary Somers. "They really showed what they are capable of as a team this weekend."
The Dons will hit the road to face San Diego State on April 7 at 2 P.M., followed by a conference match against San Diego on April 8 at 1:30 P.M.
