(5/1/2016) Track at the Payton Jordan Invitational
The Dons' contingent held their own with season and school bests by both the men and women on the warm spring day at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
JoJo Ananouko surpassed her previous best javelin throw by nearly four meters, taking fifth in the competition. Her new school record was set on her third attempt of the afternoon where she hurled the javelin 44:20 meters, or 145 feet. On the men's side of the javelin, Katoa Ahau's 54.89 meter throw was good for 10th in the field, and stands as a new season best for the redshirt sophomore from Kaimuki, Hawaii.
Two women toed the line in the 1,500 meters, with Kate Jamboretz and Weronika Pyzik both racing to their season-best marks in the event. Running in the same heat, Jamboretz circled the track in 4:24.94 to finish in eighth, and Pyzik crossed the line in 4:25.09 to take 10th.
Hugh Nicklason finished his heat of the 1,500 meters in third place, with a time of 3:44.64, the second-fastest 1,500 time for a USF athlete this season. He was beat out by Joel Hubbard of Syracuse and Daniel Castle, running for the Air Force World Class Athletes Program. Capt. Castle, a 2009 graduate of the Air Force Academy, is a KC-135 Aircraft Commander.
The Dons now have a week off to gear up for the West Coast Last Chance meet on May 14. USF's 'home meet,' held at the track at San Francisco State, serves as the last qualifying opportunity the track and field team will have to earn their spot in the field at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships.
