BURTON-UPON-TRENT, England – Former Don record-setting goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel continues to see international success after she earned her first cap with the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team in helping lead the U.S. squad to a 2-1 win over Norway on June 6 in the Nordic Women's Tournament at St. George's Park Football Centre north of London.
"Earning my first cap was truly a childhood dream," said Schiffel. "It is such an honor and privilege anytime you are able to put on the jersey and represent your country. The experience as a whole – traveling and competing with the team – means just as much as the cap. Whether you play every minute or none, it's important to embrace your role, whatever it may be. My experience will help me continue to improve myself as a person, which in turn will help me as a player."
Schiffel, a 2015 first-team all-region selection in her senior year on the Hilltop, allowed a goal in the 71st minute but registered seven saves in the win.
"Any time you are put into a game situation, you will face problems that you need to solve within those 90 minutes," added Schiffel on her team's performance versus Norway. "We did a great job of adjusting to the different style of play, handled them well defensively and finished our chances up top."
The U.S. went on to win the tournament, defeating Sweden (3-1) and drawing with England (1-1), in addition to its victory over Norway.
Schiffel has taken over the starting keeper spot on her pro team in Norway where she has helped lead Avaldsnes IL to a 7-1-1 record while recording five shutouts.
"I want to play at the highest level with the U.S. Women's National Team," said Schiffel, "but right now I am focused one day at a time and improving with my club here in Norway."
