Dons Drop Aztecs in Exhibition

SAN FRANCISCO – If their first taste of game action was any indication, the USF women's soccer team is looking to feature a balanced attack in 2016. The Dons received goals from Sonja Giraud and Miciah Madison in a 2-0 exhibition win over San Diego State Friday evening at Negoesco Field.
The contest was played with three 30-minute periods followed by a 15 minute overtime period.
Giraud got the Dons on the board at the 9:20 mark in the second period when she took a pass from Madison dribbling in the corner near the end line. Giraud corralled the pass in front of the San Diego State keeper and punched it in from around 12 yards out.
In the final period Giraud returned the favor by delivering a pass to Madison in the box that Madison was able to finish into an empty net from 10 yards, giving USF its final 2-0 edge.
USF's defense largely limited San Diego State's chances as the Dons outshot the Aztecs 8-6 on the night.
SDSU had their best scoring chance thwarted with 1:30 left in the match as Camryn Wendlandt received a corner kick in front of the goal but had her shot stabbed by USF keeper Olivia Camera.
Camera's save was one of three for the Dons, while San Diego State recorded two.
The Aztecs held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks in the game.
The Dons open the regular season at Negoesco Field on Friday, Aug. 19 when they host Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m.
