Battle in the Bay Classic Draws/Results
SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco tennis team concluded a successful weekend hosting the Battle in the Bay Classic with a trio of Dons playing in the final day of the competition, and a fortifying Kids Day event with community partner Harper for Kids on Sunday.
"The eighth annual Battle in the Bay was a smashing success," noted USF's director of tennis
Peter Bartlett. "I think we topped previous tournaments, and we've added some things like live streaming and the way we mic'd the courts that have made the event even better. Â I think year in and year out, we've gotten the tournament to perform better."
On the court, the pairing of
Shanna Dos Santos and
Anna Sokiran came away with the runners-up designation in women's doubles, falling to the top seed in the bracket and top two singles players on the weekend, Lauren Marker and Paris Corley from Arizona.
Marker and Corley weren't finished on the day after earning the doubles crown, as the two faced off later in the morning for the singles championship trophy. Marker, sister of USF Dons player
Ryan Marker, defeated her doubles partner Corley, 6-2, 6-3, to head home with a pair of titles.
On the men's side, USF's
Oliver Poysti teamed up with TCU's Jerry Lopez on the weekend, and the duo advanced to the semifinal round taking out teams from Portland and Cal en route to the final day's action. The pair eventually fell to the bracket's No. 2 seed, Brandon Holt and Riley Smith of USC, 8-3.
The men's title match saw Cal Poly's Ben Donovan face off against USC's Robbie Bellamy, and Bellamy came away the victor after a tough three-setter.
"It's amazing the quality of tennis between the men and the women this weekend with the highest level of college tennis, and storied programs like USC and Arizona," reflected Bartlett. "From the USF side, I thought both the men's and women's teams performed well, and we have some big potential coming up here for the fall season to build on our success here."
Up next for the Dons, the men head to UC Davis' Aggie Invitational this weekend while the women hit the courts at the Cal Nike Invitational.
