FORT MYERS, Fla. – The USF men's soccer team fell into a 2-0 hole at Florida Gulf Coast and wasn't able to pull themselves back despite
David Garrett's score in the 78th minute en route to a 2-1 defeat on Thursday evening at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Florida Gulf Coast (2-2-1) got the scoring started in the 25th minute when Caleb George delivered a low cross from the left wing that Dylan Sacramento was able to punch in right in front of the net.
USF (2-2-0) was able to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime and through much of the second frame until Albert Ruiz scored in the 71st minute to put FGCU up 2-0 by finishing off a rebound in traffic in the box that Glasnovic did everything in his power to prevent, but was unable to stop after the third or fourth rebound was booted around.
Garrett teamed up with
Christian De Luna shortly thereafter to help the Dons respond and get on the board. De Luna caught the Florida Gulf Coast defense off guard when he threaded a pass from the right wing near the endline that found Garrett unattended and waiting to redirect the offering into the empty net for his team-leading second goal of the year.
Ultimately, that would be as close as the Dons would get, despite holding a 17-13 advantage in shots on the night, including an 11-5 edge in the second half. Glasnovic tallied three saves in the contest.
The Dons were unable to capitalize on their set plays as they fired off 12 corner kicks to FGCU's five.
UP NEXT: The Dons continue their road trip on Saturday with a 10 a.m. (PDT) contest at South Florida.
