Former USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel is finding her transition to professional soccer to be quite fruitful in the early going. On January 4, Schiffel was invited to the U.S. U23 Women's National Team camp, which takes place Jan. 6-13 in Carson, Calif. Then, on Jan. 5, Schiffel was acquired by the Seattle Reign of the National Women's Soccer League.
"I am excited for many reasons to have signed with the Reign," Schiffel told the Seattle Reign blog, TheBold.net. "Working and playing every day with top players, coaches, and club will provide phenomenal experience on and off the field. Also, to be back in the States on the west coast, in a beautiful and progressive city, could not be any more ideal. As a person and player, this upcoming season will bring many opportunities for growth. I am thankful for this privilege and I can't wait for the season to start."
The 2017 NWSL season begins in April. The Seattle Reign finished 2016 in fifth place at 8-6-6 overall.
Schiffel, who will be serving her second stint with the U.S. U23 squad, is one of four goalkeepers invited to camp this time around. She previously participated in the U18 and U20 camps before earning her first cap with the U23's at the Nordic Women's Tournament in England last summer.
A fourth-round pick of the Washington Spirit in last year's NWSL Draft, Schiffel opted to purse an opportunity with Avaldsnes IL in the Norwegian Toppserien where she was named the league's top goalkeeper after helping lead the squad to an 18-win season and second-place finish in the league that qualified them for the UEFA Champions League.
Schiffel concluded her USF career in 2015 as the leader in career wins (29), shutouts (23) and minutes played in goal (6,514). In her senior season, she established new single-season records in wins (13), shutouts (9) and minutes (1,865) while helping the Dons set a new program record of 13 overall victories en route to a program-best conference finish of second place.
