Jack Kennedy, who has served as interim head men's golf coach since January 1, has been appointed to the position on a full-time basis effective immediately.
Â
Kennedy has worked with both men's and women's programs for the previous three seasons as an assistant coach and was elevated to interim men's head coach at the first of the year. Under Kennedy's tutelage, the Dons finished in the top-10 in two spring events and posted four of its five lowest rounds of the season. His work with freshman
Tim Widing was instrumental in the young Swede landing first team All-West Coast Conference honors and a spot in the NCAA Regionals.
Â
"Jack has done a great job transitioning our men's golf program over the past year as acting head coach," said USF Director of Athletics
Scott Sidwell. "We are excited to have him take the reigns of the program on a permanent basis to put USF golf back on the national stage in the postseason and consistently compete for West Coast Conference championships. We look forward to working with Jack to win at the highest level."
Â
"It's a great honor for myself and family to be appointed to the position of head men's golf coach at the University of San Francisco," said Kennedy. "I'd like to thank
Scott Sidwell and his administrative team for giving me this opportunity. USF has been a very special place to me over the years. I'm confident this program can compete on a national level."
Â
Kennedy, 35, was a four-year golf letter winner at Grinnell (Iowa) College and earned first team All-Midwest Conference honors in 2006. He also played basketball for the Pioneers under head coach David Arseneault. He was responsible for starting the women's golf program at The Gregory School, his high school alma mater located in Tucson, Ariz. The team qualified for the state tournament in its first year of existence. An accomplished player, Kennedy has competed in both the Arizona and California State Amateur Championships.
Â
Kennedy first came to USF in 2008 as a graduate assistant coach with the men's basketball program. In 2010, he was promoted to director of basketball operations and then moved into a full-time coaching capacity for the 2012-13 season. After serving as an assistant men's basketball at San Jose State for the 2013-14 season, Kennedy returned to the Hilltop in the fall of 2014 to work with both golf programs as an assistant coach.
Â
A native of Tucson, Ariz., Kennedy earned his degree in political science from Grinnell in 2006 and his master's degree from USF's highly-acclaimed sports management program in 2010. Jack and his wife Kelsey reside in Menlo Park with their daughter, Lucy.
