Dons in Third After Opening Round of Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. – Low scores were in abundance in the opening round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational hosted by Pacific at the Stockton Country Club. The University of San Francisco men's golf team was no different as the Dons finished the day third with a 6-under 278 after the first 18 holes.
USF trails only leader San Jose State, who shot a 13-under, and No. 16 BYU who finished the opening day 9-under. The Dons finished the afternoon with 17 birdies which is fifth most in the tournament so far, the bid difference was USF's ability to avoid trouble. The Dons were even as a team on par-3s today and under par on the par-5s.
Leading the Dons after 18 is sophomore Toby Briggs. Briggs was very sharp on the day finishing tied for fourth with a 4-under 67. He opened the tournament birdie-birdie on one and two before finishing the front-9 1-under. On the back-9 he was even better, recording birdies on 13, 14, and 16.
Finishing tied for 15th was freshman Christoffer Palsson who turned in a 2-under 69 on Thursday. He was one of three Dons to finish under par for the day. Palsson opened the tournament with five straight pars before recording birdies on six and eight to go to the turn 1-under. On the back-9 he birdied 14 to go into the clubhouse 2-under.
Sophomore Soren Lind finished his first round with a 1-under 70 which has him tied for 26th. On the front-9 he was even after recording a birdie on nine. He carried that momentum over on the back-9 with birdies on 11, 12, 14, and 16 to finished 1-under.
Junior Tim Widing finished tied for 45th after finishing with a 1-over 72. Widing was 1-over on the front-9 and even on the back after scoring birdies on 12 and 14. Sophomore Alex Chin finished tied for 49th with a 2-over 73.

Today was a good start," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "We set ourselves up to be in contention. Toby was really good for us today. Chris and Soren were very solid all day. We know we have a really good round in us and we will be ready to play tomorrow."
