TF | Men's 1,500m Performance Highlights Day in Los Angeles

Stanford, Calif. - The University of San Francisco track and field's day in Southern California was highlighted by the performances in 1,500m by both the men and women at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational.

In the men's 1,500m, Jack Rowe, Henry Mong, Scott Halsted and Isaias DeLeon all placed in the top-10, while posting three personal bests and a season best in this event.

The duo of Rowe and Mong would put together solid races, beating their personal bests by a considerable margin. Rowe's time of 3:44.93 was good enough to finish second in the heat and second overall, while Mong's 3:46.60 would have him finish fifth in their heat, as well as overall. Both of their times rank in the top-10 in program history.

Also finishing in the top-10 overall was Scott Halsted, who would beat his previous best of the season, posting a mark of 3:49.25. Capping off the impressive performances from USF was Isaias DeLeon who posted a time of 3:53.00 to finish first in his heat and ninth overall. That mark for the freshman was a personal best.

Staying in the 1,500, freshman Lea Meyer competed in her outdoor opener today, coming up against stiff competition in fellow freshman from Texas A&M, Sammy Watson. Meyer would finish second behind Watson with a solid time of 4:29.78, which was good enough for her to finish second-place overall.

With a small squad competing, head coach Helen Lehman-Winters was focused on stretching the legs of her athletes as they look toward next weekend's Cardinal Classic, which will begin on April 20-21.

COACHES QUOTES
Head coach Helen Lehman-Winters
On the performance by the men in the 1,500:
"We had gutsy performances in the 1,500m's today. In the first heat, Jack (Rowe) and Henry (Mong) both ran four-second personal bests, while Scott (Halsted) improved on his season's best in that same heat."

On the Meyer's outdoor opener:
"Lea had a respectable outdoor opener. It was nice to finally have her on the outdoor oval after her indoor season was cut short with her tumble at the MPSF Championships. This weekend served as a tune-up for next weekend's Cardinal Classic and, for the most part, it served its purpose."
