SAN FRANCISCO – Pat McCurry, who served as an assistant coach for the Boise State cross country and track and field program for the last two years, has been named USF's head cross country and track and field coach, Director of Athletics Scott Sidwell announced today.
"Pat brings a wealth of experience at winning and recruiting at the highest level," said Sidwell. "He will continue the great growth of our track and field program, we are looking forward to our continued success in the classroom and in competition".
McCurry becomes just the third head coach of the cross country and track and field program, taking over from legendary head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. He inherits a program built for sustained success after the women's program captured second at the NCAA Championships last season and has won six West Coast Conference Championships in the last decade on the women's side.
"The opportunity to take over a national caliber program that also offers the incredible student-athlete experience that USF does is something I certainly could not pass up," said McCurry. "Obviously Coach Lehmen-Winters and Coach Wetli did incredible things at USF and I look forward to continuing to build the on the foundation they have left. I can't wait to get to the Hilltop and get to work with our staff and student-athletes."
While at Boise State, McCurry made an immediate impact for the Broncos. Overseeing the middle distance runners, in his first year he guided Boise State's Sadi Henderson to All-American honors in the 800m at the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Track and Field Championships.
In 2018, he had four female athletes qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round meet, three of them in the 800m. He had two women qualify for the Outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800m that same year. In doing so, Boise State joined Texas A&M, Clemson, and Villanova as the only teams in the country to have that honor.
In the indoor arena, the women's distance medley relay ran the fastest time in the country in 2018, clocking in with a time of 10:58.93, a program record and first time under the 11 minute barrier. That same season, Henderson was named the USTFCCCA West Region Track Athlete of the Year for Indoor.
Under his tutelage the Bronco women's cross country team took sixth at the NCAA Championship, with the program finishing sixth overall in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings.
Prior to Boise State, McCurry spent the previous 13 seasons as the head coach of the College of Idaho men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. While at the College of Idaho, McCurry guided the women's track and field team to four-consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships from 2013-16. He led 153 C of I track and field athletes to All-CCC honors and 69 to individual championships. In addition, four cross country athletes earned individual conference titles under his guidance.
On the national stage, McCurry led the men's cross country team to 10 NAIA Championship appearances, including a seventh-place finish in 2015. The women's cross country team enjoyed similar success, having qualified for eight straight NAIA Championships (2008-15) and two runner-up finishes in 2012 and 2013.
Prior to coaching at C of I, McCurry was an assistant coach at Eastern Oregon. He helped his alma mater to a national runner-up finish at the 2002 NAIA Men's Cross Country Championships.
McCurry has also coached several post-collegiate athletes over the last few years, including three elite women's steeplechasers. He guided Alycia Butterworth to a spot on the Canadian team for the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London. Former Bronco Marisa Howard had a banner 2017 season running a personal best of 9:30, which ranked her fifth among American steeplers. Megan Rolland finished seventh at the 2016 Olympic Trials and eighth this past year at the USATF Outdoor National Championships.
