PROVO, Utah — A strong push late in the match Thursday by the University of San Francisco volleyball team wasn't enough to overcome top-10 ranked and host BYU, as the No. 9 Cougars came charging back in the third set to complete a 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-23) West Coast Conference sweep over the Dons at Smith Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BYU (15-2, 6-0 WCC) had dominated both of the first sets, winning each by more than 10 points, but San Francisco (4-12, 0-5 WCC) wasn't going down quietly. The Dons jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the third set, then it became a back-and-forth battle. For the next 27 points, neither team led by more than two, with nine ties and two lead changes just in that span.
San Francisco shot back in front with a 6-1 spurt, taking a 22-18 lead and looking to get back into the match with a set victory. Kills by McKenna Marshall and Emily Zinger, plus service aces from Anna Dalla Vecchia and Marshall powered the run. But the defending WCC champions wanted the sweep. BYU roared from behind, scoring seven of the last eight points, including six consecutive to win the set, 25-23, and win the match, 3-0.
The Cougars hit .500 in the first set alone and were hitting .393 through the first two frames. Meanwhile, they held San Francisco to .000 hitting on 70 total attempts in the first two sets.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

10: Marshall finished with 10 kills Thursday. It marked her third double-digit kills performance this year (five matches played).
10: USF Libero Anna Dalla Vecchia totaled 10 digs. It was her 15th match (out of 16) this season in which she logged double-digit digs.
