WBB | Dons Progress Across the Board in Final Exhibition

SAN FRANCISCO — Another outstanding offensive performance and telling adjustments made midway through highlighted Saturday's final tune-up of 2019-20 for the University of San Francisco women's basketball team, as the Dons went over 100 points for the second straight time in the preseason with a 105-68 exhibition victory over Chico State at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • USF freshman guard Ioanna Krimili displayed her shooting prowess again Saturday, knocking down six 3-pointers and scoring 25 points. She also had 20 points a week ago versus San Francisco State. All five Dons starters Saturday scored at least 12 points. As a quintet, they shot 60.7% (34 for 56) from the floor and outrebounded Chico State on their own, 26-18.

  • The Dons scored 11 straight points and went a 19-2 run in the first quarter to take a commanding 19-4 lead in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the game, but Chico State didn't go away that easily. Over the final 3 1/2 minutes of the first period, the Wildcats whittled down that lead to one with a 14-0 run of their own. San Francisco had five turnovers and went 0 for 3 from the floor during that stretch.

  • Chico State eventually tied the game at 24-24 nearly three minutes into the second quarter. USF held on to the lead, but couldn't pull away during the second, only leading by four at halftime. The Dons adjusted at halftime, though, and rocketed out of the gate in the second half with an 18-2 run in the first five minutes. San Francisco outscored the Wildcats 30-12 in the third and 67-34 overall after halftime.

  • The Dons held Chico State to 12% lower shooting in the second half while increasing their own shooting percentage by 5%. San Francisco got to the free-throw line in the second half, going 11 for 14, and outrebounded the Wildcats, 23-10, in the half alone. All five USF starters scored double-digit points after halftime. The Dons also took care of the ball better after the break, reducing their turnovers from 11 in the first two quarters to only four in the final two.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 17.1%: The Dons were much better at the free-throw line Saturday than a week ago. They shot 81.0% (17 for 21) from the charity stripe against Chico State after posting a 63.9% (23 for 36) against San Francisco State on Saturday – a 17.1% improvement.
  • 52.4%: Chico State shot 52.4% (11 for 21) from 3-point range. Nearly half of all the Wildcats' field goals (24) were 3-pointers.
  • 59.4%: San Francisco shot 59.4% in the game while holding Chico State to 40.0%. It was more than an 11% increase from the previous exhibition in which it shot 48%.
COMING UP
  • San Francisco opens the 2019-20 regular season on Nov. 5 at Northern Colorado. The Dons' first game in The City will be Nov. 9 versus Stanford at the Chase Center. USF's first competition in War Memorial at the Sobrato Center is slated for Nov. 16 versus CSUN.
