MGOLF | Dons Strong Finish in Opening Day Has Them in Hunt

SAN FRANCISCO – Playing on the historic Lake Course at the Olympic Club, the University of San Francisco men's golf team had a strong second round to finish the first day in sixth at the USF hosted Olympic Club Intercollegiate.
USF finished the day with a 12-over 580 (295-284) on the par-71 course. The Dons opened the tournament in eighth after 18 holes before moving up two spots with a strong second round. The 284 was the fifth lowest score of the day.
Tim Widing led the Dons, his blistering second round saw him climb 22 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for eighth. After 36 holes he recorded a 1-under 141 (74-67). Widing opened the tournament with four birdies in the first round before carding six in the second round, the 10 birdies are second most in the tournament.
Sophomore Alex Chin had a very strong opening day. Chin is currently tied for 11th with a 1-over 143 (71-72). In the first round, after a bogey-bogey start to begin the day he was flawless on the back-9. He eagled the first hole and carded a birdie on the fourth to finish the round strong.
Soren Lind is in third for the Dons, he finished the day tied for 33rd with a 5-over 147 (74-73). Christoffer Palsson finished tied for 44th with an 8-over 150 (77-73). Toby Briggs is tied for 54th with an 11-over 153 (76-77).
The Dons had two players competing as individuals in Matthew Anderson and Christopher Adnams. Both players had excellent rounds. Anderson cracked the top-20, finishing tied for 15th with a 2-over 144 (71-73). Adnams finished tied for 44th with an 8-over 150 (70-80). His highlight of the day was an eagle on the par-5 1st in the opening round.
Cal State Fullerton is in first after two rounds, finishing the day with a 10-under 558 (279-279). The individual champion is the Titans' Derek Castillo who finished with an 8-under 134 (65-69).
The Dons will wrap up the tournament tomorrow when they tee off at 8:45 a.m.
